ARTSATIONAL!

by Janine Jacobs

On March 2, Children’s Services held its second “School Night @ the Library” event. This family event, titled Artsational!, was billed as a celebration of the arts and featured musician Craig Newton. Playing 10 different musical instruments, ranging from a penny whistle to a trombone to an electric guitar. Mr. Newton traced the history of music in America from Colonial times through Rock and Roll. Hands were clapping, toes were tapping, and the audience of over 150 people could not help singing along.

Around the edge of the room were hands-on activities and demonstrations from the Children’s Museum at La Habra, CSUF Department of Music, CSUF Department of Theater & Dance, Fullerton Museum Center, Heritage Museum of Orange County, Muckenthaler Cultural Center, Orange County’s Pacific Symphony, and the Library’s teen volunteers. Children were able to try their hands at weaving, playing musical instruments, throwing a pot on a potter’s wheel, trying on different theater masks, mosaics, dressing in different costumes, and several other arts inspired activities. A great time was had by all as the sensational evening came to a close. To coin a new word, this celebration of the arts was truly “Artsational!”
