Hung Liu stands as one of the most important contemporary painters from China. Born in Changchun, Manchuria and raised during some of the most tumultuous times in recent Chinese history, Liu developed a unique style that combines social realism, abstraction and photography on loose drip-stained canvases. Through her large-scale paintings, she evokes the beauty of her people, and the poetry and tragedy of her native homeland. Liu has shown her work nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions since 1978 and her pieces are part of several prestigious collections including the Library of Congress, Washington DC, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA and The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY to name a few. In 2006 she created Going Away, Coming Home, a public commission window project for Terminal 2 at Oakland International Airport in California, which consists of a 160-foot glass panel with etched imagery along the terminal walkway. Numerous catalogues and a multitude of articles have been written about her work, most recently the esteemed ArtNews ‘Critic’s Pick’ (February 2010) described Liu’s work as, “focused on genuine emotion and life experiences”. Liu has been a Professor of Art, Mills College, Oakland, California since 1990.
The Artist in Residence program is a continuing project coordinated by the Fullerton College Art Department originally established in 1972. Through this program world-renowned artists are invited to Fullerton College to exhibit their work in the campus art gallery and interact with students while providing insight into their various artistic careers. Demonstrations and workshops led by artist Hung Liu as well as an artist lecture are all free of charge and open to the public. The Fullerton College Art Department is proud to present Hung Liu as the distinguished Artist in Residence for 2010.
