Violethour Studio Activities and Artist Installations

*I Know You Are, But What Am I? A show of Fine Art inspired by drawings of children. This show will have you reminiscing about all those paintings your kids have brought home.

*Spectacular Shadow Puppet Show by Kerstin Fletcher & Josh Costa titled “Myphonia”, a story for all ages.
A group of creatures have lost their ability to survive and navigate through the jungle they live in because they have grown over-reliant upon technology and modern conveniences. Only one creature remains who is self-reliant, and did not follow this trend. Because of this, the other creatures tease and bully him until, one day, the creatures are in need of his help.

*A reading from the Child’s tale “Ladyfish” by Author Nooshine Zardinejad.
Nooshine will be reading from this delightful book and signing copies for those that wish to purchase it.
The story of Ladyfish follows the narrative frame of the young beauty who loses herself in a world of greed only to return to a better sense of self at the end. The story along with the Artwork has been well received by adults and children.

*Lauren Gallegos will be signing limited copies of “The Mahogany Door”. She is the gifted young Artist.chosen to Illustrate this story.
“The Mahogany Door” leads to the book’s “teaching moments,” which resonate with the author’s own life – about things in life not always being what they seem, about the value of friendship and the importance of completing tasks, and about the secret to tapping into the power of a their only “guide” along the journey, a monstrous being they call “Billy.” And the end is designed to leave young readers anxious for book two.

Studio EMP will be hosting a kid’s project where they will make their own book out of paper and ribbon.

Gutbox, a NYC collective, presents a three dimensional installation. Visitors will be able to step into a Gutbox painting and encouraged to interact fully with all elements. This is the first installation that this New York based collective has attempted and they are pleased to make their West Coast debut at the Magoski Arts Colony.

may’s artwalk felt really good. there was a soft glow that graced the gallery making the space a comforting atmosphere. the work from these Fullerton mom’s gave a sense of appreciation and respect for a woman’s individuality. it’s really neat to see these ladies set examples for their kids with acts of creativity. each one of the artists are in the fullerton community doing something everyday to impact it one way or another. that’s pretty remarkable. here are some pics from the opening, Motherhood. Bob Marley, Messenger at The GRAMMY Museum

Bob Marley, Messenger opens today. here are some pieces we did to promote the exhibit which will be on display at The GRAMMY Museum until October 2, 2011. below is a 4″x9″ rack card where 10,000 were printed for promotion. we’ve also been rolling out ads, approximately 10 publications, promoting the show in addition to the extension of the John Lennon show, and the upcoming Roy Orbison show, including a giant poster for Amoeba Music, also below…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The GRAMMY Museum Presents
Bob Marley, Messenger

Exhibit to explore Marley’s role as the catalyst to the Reggae revolution as well as his influence on music and culture

LOS ANGELES (April 19, 2011) — On May 11, 2011, The GRAMMY Museum will debut a new exhibit, Bob Marley, Messenger. Housed on the Museum’s second floor, the exhibit will focus on Bob Marley as a private, spiritual man, as a powerful performer who used his lyrics to give a voice to the disenfranchised and as a legend who has inspired legions of fans in the 30 years since his death.

“Bob Marley gave the world something no other artist has,” said GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli. “Not only did he give us brilliant music, but he also became a heroic figure. His music spread a message of hope and unity. That message is as relevant today as it was three decades ago, and it’s our hope to help share that message with a new generation.”

Marley’s story is that of an archetype, which is why it continues to have such a powerful and ever-growing resonance: it embodies political repression, metaphysical and artistic insights, gangland warfare and various periods of mystical wilderness. And his audience continues to widen. Bob Marley gave the world brilliant and evocative music; his work stretched across nearly two decades and yet still remains timeless and universal. Bob Marley & the Wailers worked their way into the very fabric of our lives.

Bringing together more than 40 diverse artifacts, rare photographs and more, the exhibit features items from the private collection of the Marley family. On display, visitors will see a broad array of items, including:

* Marley’s famous Les Paul guitar;
* An interactive drumming station that allows visitors to learn how to play a reggae beat;
* More than 40 photographs of Marley both on and off stage;
* Ticket stubs, concert posters, tour books and fan memorabilia

Additionally, The GRAMMY Museum has conducted interviews with several artists and musicians who have been influenced by Marley and the role that he played not only as the catalyst to the reggae evolution, but also his influence on music and culture. Interview footage will be featured in the exhibit and includes conversations with Blondie, Carlos Santana, Nas and more.

“My father’s message of peace and unity was always of great importance to him and to our family,” said Ziggy. “Especially in the current times, it seems appropriate to remind the world of what he stood for and hopefully, by honoring him, we can all make efforts to live our lives with the same message.”

Bob Marley, Messenger will be on display in The GRAMMY Museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery – where temporary exhibits are showcased on a rotating basis – through October 2, 2011.

i love it when a client appreciates letterpress and when i get the chance to be a part of it. there is something beautiful about hand-printed materials, on the finest of fiber, and only a couple colors. i was asked by some friends, Kathy and Kong, to design a monogram for their wedding stationery and web site, and here’s how it came out:

motherhood. neighborhood. tonight!

an exhibit of Fullerton moms who share a passion for creative freedom! come see their works tonight.

Sharon Kennedy
Kennedy has shown in private, university, gallery, and museum exhibits around the world over the past forty years. After raising her children, she returned to her hometown to take over the helm of the Fullerton Observer newspaper after her father’s death in 1998. She continues to divide her time between editing the paper and painting.

I paint by instinct. I often begin painting with just a feeling and go from there. All my paintings start out abstract. Some remain abstract and others begin to tighten and become figurative. If I have a technique – it is just “getting out of the way” of whatever is coming through. It is a practice in being non-judgmental in the beginning. Acrylics are an ideal medium for me because there are no rules, the fumes can’t overwhelm you, and changes can continue to be made endlessly and quickly. Many of my canvases have 5 or 6 completed paintings beneath the final one. Each new painting carries on something of the ones that have gone before. Completed paintings in my studio are in constant danger of becoming underpaintings to a new inspiration if I don’t have a new canvas ready.

Sarah Carter
At the heart of it, I am a maker. As a little girl I spent most of my days utterly captivated by the world around me – often barefoot, sun-kissed, and free. And miraculously, not much has changed since those early days. My husband is my absolute, makes my heart skip-a-beat, best friend. Together we are raising our toddler son and adopting a child internationally. We live in sunny California, where we enjoy many glorious barefoot sun-kissed days.

I have the wonderful opportunity to teach creativity workshops locally in Southern California, as well as particpate in gallery shows. I have select prints available for sale and also love to create one of a kind commissioned paintings.

A few years ago I asked the question, “Have we lost our ability to imagine?”
In response, what I began to see is that the collective creative human spirit is still alive and well, although quite buried in the business of making a living.

In an effort to reclaim pieces of my imagination that I’ve lost, I’ve returned to my canvas.
Here I’ve entered quietly and listened to my own soul . . .
Slowly, very slowly, tiny bubbles of dreams and inspiration revealed themselves through my paintbrush.

My prayer is that by being brave and embracing our own imaginations, our own creativity, we can set ourselves and one another free. We can move from making a living to making a life worth living.

SolidarityRising.org … live

we wrapped up Solidarity’s new brochure and Web site just before their annual banquet on April 2nd.

Solidarity is re-imagining a Christ-centered culture. helping churches and people get deeper with Jesus. in addition to the Web site we designed an 8-page step-brochure that set the tone for the Web site. the look consists of tan textured background to add a real tactile feel, as opposed to a perfectly clean white background. there are imperfections in the texture with multiple images of the work they do in the neighborhoods of Fullerton and beyond. the color palette comes from the images taken of the kids in the Garnet neighborhood. they are warm and rich with diversity. the Web is WordPress-based for easy client-end updates and is tied into their other social media sites like Aweber, Facebook and Twitter. overall, we are proud of the Solidarity materials.
