PÄS reaches 2. Magoski Arts Colony turns 1.

this october is going to be special.

we will celebrate our 2-year anniversary as a gallery and our 1-year anniversary as a colony. on october 10, 2009 we opened our doors with the “Everybody Someday” exhibit from Ito, our nutty friend in nyc. and last year, on october 1, 2010, we celebrated our anniversary show, which consisted of at least one piece from the shows of the previous year, plus special guest Cliff Cramp, while opening for the first time in our new space with our friends Hibbleton.

i remember the first time i saw our new space. it wasn’t “our new space” yet, but i could just feel it. after great conversations with Mike Magoski about the art community in fullerton, it was finally going to happen. it, as in a central hub for the arts in downtown fullerton. one wednesday evening after the monthly art walk meeting, Jesse La Tour, Mitchel Constantin and i went back to the Violethour with mike and candace to talk about the future. after socializing over some sangria and dreaming up best case scenarios (limitless dreams), we took a tour of the buildings that mike’s dad, Pete, owns. we were floored by 1) the amount of space/property there was, 2) all the stuff stored in (1), and 3) imagination-overload. an art colony? could it be real? were all the components coming together as one? after a few more meetings, we had finalized plans. mike is a true visionary. PÄS and Hibbleton were going to move in next to the Violethour in a warehouse down on the desolate Santa Fe Ave. we informally called it the “Santa Fe Art Colony” (referenced from an email dated 5/14/10), “Magoski Arts Center” (7/7/10) and “santa fe arts commune” (7/31/10).

as i was reminiscing the birth of the colony, i fished out a few old emails dated on May 14, 2010. “Gentlemen: Not even that powerful Sangria could erase the memories of Wed night’s conversations … What I’d like to do now is some very basic pre-planning to determine a basic footprint of operations:” starts off Mike Magoski. i followed with, “one thing we [kristy and i] are for certain though is the name of this “arts colony”. we’d like to nominate the name: “The Magoski” we think it will go well in conversation. ‘Let’s meet at the Magoski.’ ‘I’m taking a workshop at the Magoski.’ ‘Did you know Hibbleton moved to the Magoski?’ ‘I met this artist who has a studio in the Magoski, that place is so inspiring.’ ‘holy sheep, i was at the Magoski last night and saw the coolest film.’ ‘Did you know about the spoken word events at the Magoski.’ mitch chimes in with links to similar places in alabama, “I think you’re really onto something here.” and jesse agrees, “To a brighter future!”

two months later on July 19, 2010, mike calls another meeting, this time he brings in Katherine England.
“9-10/10:30 pm Violethour,
Brian-PAS
Jesse- Hibbleton
Katherine- bring your Son
Magin- listen to the future
Candace- yes, I’ll have fans on”

Handout Worksheets/Plan Views
Discuss Short Term and Long Term Goals
Develop Initial Time Lines
Discuss Immediate Concerns for next 90 days

Yes, there will be wine
and background music
and a dog that loves cheese”

the initial plans were these:

on july 20, 2010, mike writes, “Pete, aka Rockit Man, aka Dad or GRandpa, has returned this morning, has been briefed, and is 100 % behind this project.” this time Tony Bach is on the emails after attending a couple meetings. there was talk about Hibbleton and PÄS combining as one, but later we agreed that separate entities in a shared space was best. we got keys and spent over a month clearing the front 1/4 of the warehouse out. our goal was to open for the september art walk! we opened on Friday, October 1, 2010, the october artwalk. close enough.

somewhere in the middle of september, we were putting in the final touches. jesse wrote on 9/24/10, “So I spent most of today working on getting the new Hibbleton Gallery ready to open. We were all together in there: me, Steve, Tony, Chuck, Brian–painting walls, sanding, putting up drywall, listening to music, hanging out. It was fun. We were thinking about creating a lounge area/stage where bands can play or DJs can DJ and stuff. At one point, I looked around and said to Steve, “This place is gonna be awesome.” He said, “Yep.”

And then I went home and made some soup and watched Where The Wild Things Are. Max and his Wild Things build a fort together, and for some reason it really moves me. This idea of people creating something together. Making things as we want them. Not accepting things as they are–making them new. i feel like that’s what the gallery is all about, and this whole new Magoski Arts Colony. It’s like we’re a bunch of kids building a fort together. Making something in this world that we want to make, not because we have to or because anyone is telling us to, or because it’s gonna make us lots of money or anything stupid like that. We are doing it because it’s fun, and we want to.

Maybe that sounds cheesy, but it sounds good to me. I’ve really excited about this whole venture, guys.”

here are the only pre-opening snap shots i could find:

for PÄS, it’s been a great 2 years of growth. we’ve learned a lot. we’ve taken notes. but we must not forget why we are here… to love our community. we do that with partnering with our community and being in our community. that seemed like an easy goal with our small retail space on Harbor during the first year. now, as we become more well known and share space with big players in the local art world, sometimes it’s a little harder to focus. this month will mark a lot of reflection for PÄS where we will strive to get deeper in our commitment to the community. and, in the words of Jesse La Tour, “To a brighter future!”

yup. that pretty much sums it up.

now, one year later, The Magoski Arts Colony has a community of artists. to see, visit www.magoskiartscolony.com

PÄS interview with Neil Blender…

PÄS will start its series of Artist Interviews with Neil Blender. a strange love for cars, his pet animals, and miscellaneous oddities, Neil Blender shares a little about his life as an artist and almost nothing about his life as a pro skateboarder. he is truly one of today’s contemporary artists with a humble/mellow demeanor. his influences range from his Mom, Hagop Najarian and John Sollom to MC Escher, Van Gogh and Picasso… Neil recently participated in our “Walt” show in July. it’s our hope to publish these interviews through our blog on a regular basis. enyoy…

"Orange Cat" Acrylic on Canvas

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

PÄS: When did you know you were an artist?
NB: Last year…kidding…I don’t know.

PÄS: When did you know you were a skater?
NB: Similar answer, I remember going to The Concrete Wave in Anaheim and vomiting after skating for a long time. It was right around then, age 14.

"Just Another Dream" Acrylic on Canvas and "Squirrel" Print on Cotton

PÄS: Is it true you can vomit on demand? Tell us one time when that was beneficial.
NB: I used to do that a lot as a teen. It worked good to weird people out that didn’t already know. It was mainly after food and drink.

Loading the player …

PÄS: What did you “want to do” when you grew up?
NB: Drink beer and hang in the Garage…

PÄS: How old are you now?
NB: 47.8

PÄS: Talk about your childhood homies…
NB: As a young kid i remember Maggie, our German Shepard. Got older, skated a lot with Brad Jackman, Skip, Weiser, Parsons… Lester…

PÄS: Talk about your study habits as an adolescent…
NB: ??? Watched others do stuff to learn. Like skateboarding.

PÄS: Do you use your freestyle skateboarding mentality when you paint/draw? You invented all these epic tricks as a skater, do you think it’s just your creative side? How did you become such an innovator?
NB:

?????

PÄS: Those were dumb questions, huh?

PÄS: You seem to do your art with (and on) many different mediums. what’s your favorite? why?
NB: I like all surfaces, but Denim has to be a favorite. You can get “line screen” effects with it. Glossy surfaces are rad too.

"At The Dump" Acrylic on Denim fabric

Acrylic on Acetate

PÄS: What kind of music do you like?
NB: Mostly Rock, i guess, some Jazz if it’s old, and there’s no sax. Country too, ‘old time’. I like The Cars a lot.

PÄS: I’ve heard you were the first pro skateboarder to have his own artwork on his deck. Is this true?
NB: Not sure.

Blender's 5th illustration graphic.

PÄS: The guy laying down with the coffee cup. Is that you? Talk about it…
NB: That was my 5th graphic for the bottom of the board in 1985, or 86. Graphics didn’t change too much in the early 80′s. When you changed the shape, you’d want to match up with some new art. I started using paint brushes and ink then.

PÄS: What are the names of these graphics? (pictured below)

Blender decks

NB: Coffee Break, Faces, Prayer, and Scorpion. The Scorpion was drawn by Larry Gordon’s son, Eric.

PÄS: If there was no such thing as Art or Skateboarding, who would you be?
NB: Jim Thome

PÄS: What’s your relationship with Vans?
NB: I work for Vans doing art, way stoked on them. Check some of the Joel Tudor gear online.

PÄS: Did you do any work for the Joel Tudor line, or do you just like to sport it?
NB: Both…

PÄS: When is the last time you paid for clothing?
NB: A few weeks ago.

Blender illustration from Vans Thalia show...

PÄS: Are you brand conscious?
NB: Fully, you have to be or you can get attacked by friends.

PÄS: Talk about your mom as an artistic influence…
NB: Yeah, fully encouraging creativity to us as kids. Through clay, drawing, paint. She worked with a lot of stuff. Pen and Ink, Oil, Watercolor…you name it. She’d make her own christmas cards with silk screens, now I understand the commitment if you want to screen stuff. My sister and brother, both older, were always drawing stuff. So i started too.

PÄS: How often do you get a haircut?
NB: 3 month intervals, but sometimes it goes on and on, then i start getting George Harrison hair…

PÄS: Do you read? If so, what are you currently reading?
NB: I read in small amounts, captions on photos is good. It takes so long to read a regular book, though, I’m reading The Source Field Investigations by David Wilcock right now.

PÄS: Do you subscribe to any magazines? Art pubs?
NB: No subscriptions now either. I get the AMS catalog though (American Music Supply).

PÄS: Who do you live with?
NB: Tons of air molecules.

Walt!

PÄS: Talk about Walt… (the cat our show was named after)
NB: Walter was one of our cats in the early eighties. He was rowdy and controlled the area on Crone Ave. in Anaheim where we lived. A lot of notches on his ears from sparring with the other cats. They looked like someone took scissors and cut a few V’s out. He was mellow though, to us, he just wanted his space and not be hassled.

PÄS: We came across an old Thrasher spread (Feb. 1985) on you and found this “ALL ABOUT NEIL” commentary by Jason Jessee to be pretty funny. Are these true? How close were you to Jason Jessee?
NB: Close, we used to skate with Steve Claar all the time. Jason’s funny. Some of the fun facts changed. I drive a Honda now, have been for the last 10 years. Volvos are good at using a lot of gas. They look cool though — anything pre-1990.

PÄS: Are there any other fun facts you want your art fans to know…
NB: People shouldn’t be into Hang Gliding…at all. I don’t like Palm Trees. Leaf Blowers are the worst invention. Bic Lighters are the best invention.

PÄS: Have you ever been interviewed by an art gallery before?
NB: No, it’s hot though.

downtown fullerton art walk — no.19

we experienced a little art from the street this month in PÄS Gallery. although this was not a survey of graffiti and street art, it certainly was a playground for local artists Juan Cuevas (18), José M. Solis (18) and Sean Hanohano (17) as they spent the days up to the artwalk markering up canvases and spray painting the PÄS walls… each of the artists expressed their love for graffiti art and the adrenaline rush it gives them. “it’s a way for me to express myself currently while exposing some of my roots.” says jose while juan adds, “you have to worry about the cops on one end and tokers town on the other.” in the battle of constant fear and pure love, these guys know art. that’s why we have them in our gallery.

in addition to the graf artists, we displayed select works from Ricardo Gonsalves, old skool activist and conceptual artist, as well as some limited edition signed prints from Emigdio Vasquez straight out of the Fred Ortiz Collection. both come from the birth of Chicano art which originated here in southern California…

even grandma sally loves graffiti art!

thank you for supporting PÄS Gallery and Fullerton art.

Hagop Najarian + John M. Sollom = August at PÄS

PÄS Gallery presents the recent work of Hagop Najarian and John M. Sollom in “Nhoj and Najar’s Serenade” opening on Friday, August 5, 2011 during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk from 6-10pm.

Come witness the work of these prolific painters who will one day be studied in art history books, and what i call, “The New Masters.” Fatefully, these artists grew up together and went to the same school simultaneously from first grade through graduation at Cal State Long Beach with art degrees. This August, they will show together, side by side, their most recent works. In addition to the opening, there will be an intimate closing for the artists on Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 6-10pm.

Hagop Najarian is a working artist and college professor living in La Mirada, California. Since 1999, he has been teaching drawing and painting at Cerritos College and is currently the Art and Design Department Chair. In 1993, he attended Tyler School of Art at Temple University to begin his graduate study through their prestigious study abroad program in Rome, Italy. It was the Italian Fresco painting masters like Duccio, Masaccio and Giotto that brought clarity to his work. Through the influence of these Italian masters, concepts of humanity, domestic grounding and the joy of life became constant subjects for his work. In addition to exhibiting all over southern California, he has lectured about his paintings at seminars, panel discussions and colleges in the Los Angeles area. His recent series of paintings symbolically use human figures, animals and nature to create a dialogue that reminds us of how we coexist and maintain our identity in this world. Sensations of sight and sound ebb and flow as the images are fractured in and out of recognizable forms, creating a playful dialogue between humans and nature.

John M. Sollom, also a resident of La Mirada, California, captures Today like no other. As a full time artist, his resume of gallery shows in southern California is very extensive, as is the momentum of his collectors. His influences consists of Elmer Bischoff, David Park, Hans Hoffman, Frank Auerbach, Larry Rivers, Rembrant, Mark Rothco, John Singer Sergeant, Manet, Rauschenberg, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Bonnard, Lucien Freud, Ed Hopper, and living artists Hagop Najarian, William Zdan, Neil Blender, Tony Bach, and Theresa Pfarr to name a few. His most recent body of work displays everyday items—spontaneous pop-culture paintings that have taken an hour or less to complete… just like in his friend Professor Najarian’s drawing class. In the Serenade show, he also shares intimate family moments. John’s signature thick, loose brush stroke carries extreme likeness of his subjects. In his assemblage with found objects of daily life and relics of the past, he includes his own oil paintings making him the well-rounded Americana artist of today.

The Prince Family by John M. Sollom, 2011.

RSVP on facebook.

Neil Blender at PÄS Gallery… until July 31st.

“Legendary skateboarder and artist Neil Blender doing what he does best. If you know who Neil Blender is and haven’t seen this video yet, this will make your day.” -youtube.com/beckczar

^half pipe paintings…

“Walt!” featuring the works of Neil Blender is named after his cat. and his work in the show differs in medium but maintains his crude approach to the things he sees.

Before showing at PÄS, Neil had a show in Laguna Beach at Vans Thalia Surf Shop where the bio below was displayed. it just so happens that 2 of his contemporary influences are coming to PÄS in August: Hagop Najarian and John Sollom!
